Luke 23:27-31

When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.  And they cast lots to divide his clothing.

About the Picture

The FPCD Israel tour visited the Garden Tomb and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the two locations most likely to be where Jesus was crucified.  The docent is explaining the location and why the Romans would use a hillside over the road heavily travelled into Jerusalem as the best place to publicly crucify criminals.

From the website The Garden Tomb

The Garden Tomb is found close to the Damascus Gate outside the city walls of Jerusalem, and is a possible location for the crucifixion, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is owned and run by a British Christian charity and our staff and community members look forward to giving you a warm welcome.

According to the gospels, Jesus was crucified in a place called ‘the Skull,’ (‘Golgotha,’ in Aramaic, ‘Calvary,’ in Latin). In the mid-19th century visiting Christian scholars suggested that the rocky escarpment (which can be viewed from the Garden) marked the place of Messiah’s crucifixion. Although today the rock has suffered considerable erosion from the elements and pollution, it is still possible to see the outline of the skull formation.

The gospel accounts note a garden located near the site of crucifixion, and archaeological evidence, including an ancient winepress, suggests that the area was an agricultural garden. It is in this garden that we show our visitors the ancient tomb.
